The question I'm asked most before a session: WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?
I've had this dilemma myself; with four people to dress, and two of them VERY PICKY about their clothes, it can be hard to know what will look best in photos. I'm here to give you a few tips to help make it easier!
Patterns
Less is more as far as patterns go! It is better to have one member of the group in a bold pattern if you want, and everyone else in either solid colors or more subtle patterns that coordinate. If everyone is wearing plaid, your bodies will start to morph together and look like a blob of flannel with multiple heads. Of course, if that's the look you're going for, DO IT.
Colors
I tend to avoid stark white and black, although it's not a hard and fast rule. Ivory or cream look great in photos, but white can be especially difficult when trying to get the colors perfect in editing. Try not to wear the exact same color as everyone else in your group, because we want some separation between bodies! It's best to coordinate with other people, but not to match them exactly.
Style
If you don't feel comfortable in what you are wearing, that discomfort will come across in your photos. Wear something you feel great in! Generally, try to wear a style that flows with the other members of your group. If one person is wearing a ballgown and the others are wearing jeans, it might look a little disjointed. It's also a great idea to dress for the season, lest you end up wearing long sleeves in the summer and melt into a pool of (nicely photographed) sweat.
But above all...
Don't sweat it too much! Yes, I know I'm over here giving you all these tips, but the best one I can give is not to worry! Sometimes my favorite photos happen on the fly, when no one has curated outfits...take these photos of my kiddos for instance. They were wearing whatever they put on, and their sense of style is, well, interesting. Their clothes don't take away from the sweetness of these photos, and it's kind of nice to see them in their natural state! The picture my husband took of me with the kids is one of my favorites, and I was wearing workout clothes. Don't overthink it too much!
